Slate Belt Voters Will Take a Bulldog Over a Weasel Every Time

District Four is the slate belt, the most rustic area of Northampton County. It is also the county's most interested and passionate group of voters. They tend to be well-informed. And that's bad news for John Maher, part of the Axis of Weasel.

Express Times: "[V]oters in the northern tier of the county should re-elect Republican Ron Angle, a bulldog who has learned to control his bark but still knows when to bite. Angle has been an obstructionist, but he's learned to work with the Stoffa administration, which of late has been stymied more by Democrats than by Republicans."

Morning Call: "Re-elect Republican Ron Angle. Mr. Angle has almost 30 years in local and county elective offices and over that time his style has changed. He is less personally combative than he once was; more likely to go to court than to stage publicity stunts to make his points. Meanwhile, he is one of the smartest elected officials in the Lehigh Valley, especially when it comes to financial matters. That is key in recommending him over Democrat John F. Maher, himself retired from a banking career. Mr. Maher is not as conversant with county issues as is Mr. Angle and he has disappointingly allowed his campaign to be dragged into the gutter by Democratic Party-sponsored mailings and 'robocalls.'"

Bill White: "[A]nyone who sends out anonymous political attack ads not only is lawbreaker, but a weasel. ... Anyway, both Maher and Branco said they know nothing about the source of the anonymous calls, although only Branco made a show of being concerned. Maher, who also has benefited from negative mailers sent out by the county Democratic Committee, says he's running a positive campaign and doesn't care what anyone else is doing on his behalf."

White claims Maher's excuses are both "disingenuous" and "reflect a less-than-admirable attitude." Put a little more bluntly, Maher is a lying weasel.

Maher proves Bill White right in a Friday morning rant to machine pals that include Charles Dertinger, Joe Long, Lamont McClure and Tony Branco. His little missive, which fell out of the sky and into my grimy little hands this weekend, demonstrates Maher knows damn well who is doing his dirty work. He even proposes a lame strategy to explain it.

John Maher: "Guys; FYI, Does Bill White work for Bernie or is it the other way around! I had a brain fart this morning! Tom Severson is a constituent of my district and of Tony and isn’t within his right to take pot shots at Angle and use whatever resources he has at his disposal ? Just a thought! Regards, John"

Maher's claim to be running a positive campaign is also disproved by his complaint to county council, conveniently made on a night when Angle was not physically present to defend himself. He accused Ron of having a personal interest in a controversial slate belt development. County council solicitor Leonard Zito had investigated that complaint months earlier and had ruled, as a matter of law, that there was no conflict. Is this what Maher considers a positive campaign?

In town halls at Pen Argyl and Nazareth, Maher read from a script in which he called Angle an "antagonistic life long politician with a record of shenanigans." In Nazareth, once he was sure Angle was stuck at a hearing, Maher blurted out this snark, "He's like a child if he doesn't get his way. He stands up and stamps his feet." Once again, is this what Maher considers a positive campaign? And do you notice he only goes on the offensive when he knows Angle is not there to answer him? Those are the tactics of a person who would resort to anonymous robo calls and other smear tactics.

Ron Angle, when he spoke with The Express Times, makes it pretty clear that he had Maher's number long before last-minute finance reports made clear that Dertinger ($2,500) and McClure ($7,000) are two of the characters behind the smear campaign. Here's part of what he said. "Mr Maher has given every indication that he intends to join up with the 'Dertinger Gang' and go back to the Glenn Reibman form of government where the taxpayer was considered last and vendors and campaign contributors were considered first. To give you one example, this summer I went to bat to save taxpayers nearly $1.8 million on a county computer contract. I stood against the majority who said they were afraid of offending the contractors. My interest was saving taxpayers $1.8 million. Mr. Maher has publicly defended the majority’s position to try to award the bid to a high bidder. All in all, this race is really about good government versus bad government, moving ahead or going back."

Angle called it. He really is, as The Express Times labels him, a bulldog who still knows when to bite. And Maher really is, as Bill White labels him, a weasel.

On November 6, Pop! goes the weasel.

This makes me sick to my stomach. Dertinger, McClure, and Branco should resign. We are all hiurt when councilpersons play sleazy games like this.

But, Joe Long, the Demo Committee CHAIR is involved too. If that's what the Democratic Party condones in Northampton County, then I can no longer call myself a Democrat.

I'm changing my registration to Independent until he resigns.

You say Branco misses appointments, yet in this piece, it sounds as if Angle misses more than anyone. You keep referring to Maher making comments when Angle isn't there. I guess it's okay for Angle to miss events, but no one else can. While were naming people based on the animal kingdom, I guess you could call Angle a scaredy cat. A Republican who can't wait to change parties to the Democratic side, the day after the election, but will vote for Maher. It's time for all Republicans to stand up to Angle and Ferraro, and let the county move forward not to court.

Anon 7:59,

By the numbers, the three hardest working members on county council are Grube, McHale & Angle. That's just the way it is.

This is the real Ron Angle as reported by Bill White.
" He is a destructive influence whose antics make rational discussion of issues almost impossible. He thrives on a circus atmosphere that makes it very difficult to accomplish anything,He will say or do anything to get the spotlight and throw an opponent off ballance. He ends up costing the taxpayers thousands of dollars in extra legal fees" Morning Call writer Bill White ( May 15th. 1997)

Anon 11:09 -

So it doesn't matter now that the ET wrote "Angle has been an obstructionist, but he's learned to work with the Stoffa administration," or that the MC wrote "he is less personally combative than he once was."

Sure, let's vote on a how a person was 10 years ago when things in our area were different, instead of how much good he is actually doing today. Why not?

That was the "real Ron Angle" back then, maybe, but you gotta stop living in the past!

Do you think a leopard can change it's spots?

Can't think of a constructive reply, eh? No wonder you remain anonymous.

AJ ......

The reason I remain anonymous is because I'm not political,I am not a Democrat or Republican.
I read ,I Google and try to stay on top of current events.
If this is a forum I should have my thoughts , ideas and just a place to vent,
I don't swear, slander or defame, the knowledge is there for you to interpret. You may see things different then I.
I respect your endorsment for Mr. Angle and understand.
I in fact do not agree with your stance. Please do not think my thoughts are not constructive because I remain anonymous.
To you Mr. Angle is good for the County I dissagree.
Thank you for your input, but in my position must remain as an ANON.
Thats what America is all about, a democracy if Angle wins thats fine with me the majority rules. I just think someone beside Mr. Angle is better is better to represent Northampton County.

AJ........Upon further review you were 14 years old 10 years ago.

You did'nt know Angle then and you don't know him now !!

Youth is wasted on the young.
You can't teach an old dog new tricks , but I'ts not too late for you.

The reason I remain anonymous is because I'm not political.

Then why do you post on political topics?

I read ,I Google and try to stay on top of current events.

Then why do you judge on the past instead of the present?

And what is your actual argument with me? You don't like Angle so you attack my age?

By the way, people use the age thing on me all the time. It gets them nowhere. Review all you want because I don't hide anything. I'd be willing to answer any questions you might have so you don't have to review.

Using age to prove a point is just as bad as you quoting an article from 10 years ago - it's not relevant. Further more, it doesn't make you look any wiser when trying to prove a point, whatever that point may be.

I only post on this blog when it has to do with Angle,In my opinion he is a wolf in sheeps clothing.
So If and when he wins the election you won't hear from me ever again because the people have spoken, thats my point. A little reading comprehension will help,
and you would not have asked your last question, must be an age thing.

Yeah... apparently your older generation can't make legitimate argument, let alone type one. God forbid somebody of a younger generation challenge your statements. Loser!

You promise you won't come back?

UNBELIEVABLE!?*#!?! what is wrong with mt bethel/northampton co.? all the no marshfield signs should have had angles smiling face on them cause "thems are he people". it couldn't be any clearer angle is one of marshfields "goons" and will in the end profit greatly, or so he thinks, from this ridiculous over-developement you all are having jambed down you throats. looks like your all heading straight for the slaughter house and guess who's at the wheel. not a good time to be a property owner in mt bethel and/or northampton co. maybe once the property values really take a dump, angle can pick up even more property for pennies on the dollar. it really doesn't look as though mt bethel and/or northampton co. has the ability and/or desire to protect itself from its' own (wealthy and/or questionable) citizens therefore how do you all expect to defend against big buck big city outsiders, like marshfields/preserves? i sincerely wish you all the best of luck... unfortunately it looks as though you're gonna need all the luck you can muster up. do the right thing and send marshfields/preserves packing or you all will be "packed" into the "blood truck" like the sheepeople some have referred to you as.

Every piece of filth you threw at Angle made no difference to the voters. They elected him, and rather convincingly. So get over it. It's called democracy.
